Morocco

Although not strictly related to my law practice, being a well-rounded person is. Thus, enjoying travel to other countries and cultures and taking photographs of those places. I finally got through all the photographs of Morocco from our trip there in March and they're up in two albums, one for People & Work and the other for other images from Morocco. SmugMug

Doing a "Vicky" for the iPhone?

As my friends on the MacLaw listserve will attest, I'm frequently [but not always] an early adopter and do proudly own many wonderful Mac products. On the other hand, sometimes [maybe most of the time] it's good to go slow. I've been watching the information on the iPhone over the past few months and salivating at the opportunity to have one, but mindful of the fact that I really don't 'need' one. And yet, I'm a bit tired of the button pushing of the Treo 650 and I absolutely detest Verizon's Wireless Sync lack of features [no way, that I know of, to shuffle off spam to a spam folder to be automatically deleted, no way that I know of to do a mass deletion of emails on either the WirelessSync site or the phone, etc.]. In terms of wise use of office resources, it's probably best to wait, let the dust settle, and see what options and features are really in the iPhone.

Injunctive Powers of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission

In a decision reached in March 2007, the Iowa Supreme Court confirmed that the Iowa Civil Rights Commission had broad powers to prevent and remedy discrimination in housing. In State v. Burch, the Court ruled that the judge correctly awarded damages, a civil penalty and a permanent injunction, although the court narrowed the reach of the injunction. This is not the first time the Supreme Court has recognized the Commission’s ability to obtain injunctions in civil rights cases. See Downs v. Board of Trustees of Police Retirement System, 312 N.W.2d 563 (Iowa 1981) and Iowa Code § 601A.5(4)(2005). But this is the most recent discussion of why the power is an important one for the Commission to have.

Uses for Plastic Bags

I was getting in the spirit of Earth Day recently and decided to see if there was anything out there [i.e., on the Web] which would give me ideas for uses for the ubiquitous plastic bag. Voila! There was. At About.com's section on Frugal Living, there are a host of money saving tips, and I found some four pages of possible uses for those little plastic bags, beyond taking out the litter. You'll find the article, page one, here.

New Postal Regulations

The US Postal Service is adopting "Shape-based" mailing regulations.  Basically, there will be a change in how letters, packages and parcels will be charged and in some cases it may be better to enclose papers in a half-envelope [6x11.5] rather than in the usual No. 10 sized envelope.

Another excellent discussion I found was at:  BuyersZone

Microsoft Settlement in Iowa

Rush Nigut has a good, short summary of the recently preliminarily approved settlement of the Microsoft class action which was tried and settled in Des Moines, Iowa. http://www.rushonbusiness.com/2007/04/iowa_microsoft_.html

Helpful Mac OS X applications

There are a host of programs out there for users of Mac OS X which I thought I'd mention as being especially helpful to me these days. For simplicity's sake, I'll just comment on only a few, since most people probably only want to check out a few from time to time, not a whole slew of them.
